Karen Kemp's paintings and etchings featured in this show highlight her habit of inspecting nature at close range. Kemp is especially keen to ensure that her work is broadly accessible: the birds and nests that compose her subjects evoke recognition of the familiar in nature, and for some might suggest a whimsical nostalgia. Kemp studied fresco painting at Il Laboratoria Per Affresco di Vainella in Italy and received a painting fellowship at the Vermont Studio Center in 2003. She is represented by Danette Koke Fine Art in New York, the Christopher Gallery in Stony Brook, the Boston Drawing Project at Bernard Toale Gallery, and her work is in private and corporate collections, including the Bessemer Trust, New York and San Francisco and Morgan & Finnegan, LLP, NY.
Maureen O'Connor has been called 'a masterful painter of some of our favorite things' by Randi Hopkins of the Boston Phoenix and former assistant curator of Contemporary Art at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. In her still life paintings, she likes to take a particular object and explore every visual possibility with it, and the possibilities are nearly inexhaustible. Familiar subjects in her work include ceramic ducks and candy. She cites two teachers as having been profound influences on her painting, Jason Berger of the Direct Vision Movement and renowned Boston landscape painter, George Nick. Her work is represented by Artana Gallery, Brookline, MA and is in the collections of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, Fidelity Investments, Bank of America, Children's Hospital, Biogen and AOL.com
