Off the Wall: Site-specific installation by Elizabeth Hathaway and Bo Petran

80 Border Street East Boston
October 4 - 29, 2007

Atlantic Works gallery once again provides a haven for experimental innovation. Deconstructing boundaries, artists Elizabeth Hathaway and Bo Petran shake it up in their celebration of non-conformity. The traditional divisions between the artist, the work and the public are challenged in this site-specific installation wherein the art becomes totally accessible. The viewer can touch, feel and bodily interact with abstractions floating in space and wander into exploratory caves. In this exhibition, the artists playfully respond to contemporary constructs and conventions at the social, political, and economic levels. All the art is literally displayed ‘off the wall’.

Hathaway and Petran eliminate classification disputes through the use of non-traditional materials creating forms that cross visual art disciplines. The work is hands-on, process evolving and inspired by mythology and the cross-disciplinary nature of science. Included in this departure, Hathaway floats a form where all can add their mark and merge with the work by engaging in the various open areas. The viewer is encouraged to record their addition to this all-inclusive evolution with a provided digital camera. All the photos will be displayed during the Third Thursday reception in the “people’s gallery”, an emerging space within the exhibition. Petran stretches our imagination in his dramatic cave-like structures. The explorer journeys through an internal flow of the unexpected.

Let’s take art off the altar. Come enjoy this unique experience and share in the freedom from old structures and divisions. The only lines drawn in Off the Wall are those painted by the public.
